S2 Ep. 5 - Did You Miss Us?
Alright. Welcome back to our Anchored In podcast, our SGA weekly podcast where we connect you to campus life, student voices, and everything happening at Gulf Coast. Now I am your host, JB, the SGA adviser, and we have some new faces here. So we're gonna go around and introduce ourselves.
Anastasia Berry:Hello, everyone. My name is Anastasia Berry. I'm the coordinator for program in engagement for the SGA and also the honors representative for the SGA.
JB:Nice. Kylie?
Kylie Dunn:Hi, everyone. I'm Kylie Dunn. I joined SGA this year, and I'm on the social media committee. Yay.
JB:Yes.
Ashton:Hey, everyone. My name is Ashton. I am a new SGA senator. I just recently joined, and
JB:yeah. Alrighty. So before we get into our guest here, we used to give an episode last week, so there was no episode last week. So you're probably wondering where we were, but, you know, things came up. So I'm sure you missed us.
JB:Type in the comments, yeah, say you missed us. Thank you. But we got some few new voices today. So before we get into our spiel, I just wanna, you know, try to feel out, like, how y'all feeling right now? First podcast, the cameras, hearing yourself on the mic.
JB:Like, are we nervous? Are we comfortable? Like, how do you feel?
Anastasia Berry:I'm feeling good. I'm feeling great.
Ashton:And she's feeling hungry too. Yeah.
Anastasia Berry:Okay. We're not gonna talk about that
JB:right now. Hear any stomachs bubbling, it's coming from my colleague over here.
Anastasia Berry:How are you guys feeling today?
Ashton:Pretty nervous. My my stomach hurts.
Anastasia Berry:Okay. Y'all both hungry?
Ashton:I'm a little hungry too.
JB:Goodness. Do we do we have breakfast today?
Anastasia Berry:No. Alright. We're not gonna Breakfast
JB:is the most important meal of the day. So maybe we try that next time. Okay. Kylie, how are you feeling?
Kylie Dunn:I'm afraid to breathe into the microphone.
JB:Yeah.
Anastasia Berry:Was I was about to say.
JB:Oh my goodness. You're you're Don't don't don't hold your breath. Okay? Trust me. These we have some really good equipment over here, so it's gonna you know, we got a little white screen, all that good stuff.
JB:It's gonna take away all of those effects.
Anastasia Berry:Perfect. Okay.
JB:Alrighty. So we're gonna get into our campus wave, which we talk about what events we had last week, this week, and what is coming up. So last week, we had our campus picnic. Ash, do you wanna talk about
Ashton:Yeah. Sure. Last Tuesday, we had our campus picnic. It had great turnout. It was originally supposed to be outside, but, you know, Florida weather happens, and there were, public sandwiches and chips, so basically a full meal in the cafeteria.
Ashton:It's fun.
JB:Yes. It was fun. It would have been so nice outside. Like, we bought these picnic blankets. We're have to we're gonna try it again.
JB:We're try it again when the weather cooperates. And maybe just a little cooler weather too, but, yeah, it started to drizzle, so we just moved it inside. Like Ashton said, it was a great turnout as well, so it was well received. Yeah. And then this week, we had a paint and sip tea party.
JB:Kylie, you wanna go over that one?
Anastasia Berry:Yes. My goodness. Girl.
JB:You're fine. You're
Anastasia Berry:You're fine.
Kylie Dunn:Changed the pace with our paint and sip tea party. It was intentionally one of our more wellness focused events. I had a blast. I don't drink tea, but like, I ate the chocolate covered strawberries. Yes.
Kylie Dunn:It was great. And I painted a picture, and I wanted it to be a heart, but then I couldn't paint a heart. So I kind of turned it into a flower, but I had to do the flower like four times. And then the person next to me painted a really better flower. But I still have mine, and it's still beautiful.
JB:Yes. It was your creation.
Anastasia Berry:So, Yes.
JB:Yes. Our painting session event was really good. We had Annabella bring in the tea, our president, SGA president. She's not feeling well. So hey, Annabella.
JB:Hi. Hi, Annabella. But, yes, it was it seemed so peaceful and calming out there that once the music started, and we, you know, we had some fun desserts and all that good stuff. So it it was nice. It was nice.
JB:What's actually going on right now, as we're filming this podcast is our constitution day trivia. So that is currently a collaboration with SGA, Model United Nations, and our GCSE library. So pretty much we have trivia. So students who knows the constitution the best, they're over there enjoying some snacks by SGA and some prizes as well. So today is constitution day, if you didn't know.
Anastasia Berry:Yes. It's pretty full down there. I went down there. I I looking for you, actually. I was like, where is Joshua?
JB:Well, thanks to our senators. I put it in a group Mhmm. Because I wasn't I wasn't able to get all the snacks and stuff together. So shout out to your students for getting everything over there. That way, the event could be successful and run.
JB:So it's good to see that it's it's good over there. Nice. Alright. Now let's get into what's our next way, which is what's going on next week. Anastasia, tell us what's going on.
Anastasia Berry:Next week on Tuesday, we have doughnuts with the ding. It's gonna be on September 22 from 11:11AM to one in the student union east. Basically, we're you we're gonna give you we're having an opportunity to talk with the deans, you know, any anything you wanna ask them, any interest you have, You know, get to know y'all get to know one another. Yeah. Yeah.
Anastasia Berry:Know one another. Yes. Then we're gonna have donuts, some mini milks. Just hang out and chill, introduce yourself. It's a chill event.
JB:Yes. So one of the things that we were thinking about SGA and RE board this year is creating more opportunities to where students can connect with our administration, you know, our president, vice president, all the NR deans. So I always like to like, call things series or things like that. Like so this is just one, event in our series of getting to know our administration. So, yes, we have our three deans.
JB:So you will come out and meet them, and you're gonna love them all. They're gonna be handing out donuts, so don't feel afraid to ask them questions and, you know, just hang out, Anastasia said, hang out, have fun. And we bought these little mini We got strawberry chocolate and just milk.
Anastasia Berry:Surprisingly, a lot of people don't know about, know about a lot about the deans, including me. I don't know any of our deans, unfortunately, no. So it's gonna be an opportunity for me to get to know our deans as well. I only saw the president the president once. I never saw a dean, so
JB:I'm I'm sure you know if you've seen any these, but, you know, because they do walk around a lot and things like that, so they do get out. But I wanna talk to you students. Like, when you hear, like, president, vice president, you know, deans, like, do those titles, like, seem scary to you guys whenever it comes to, like, meeting them and just having a conversation?
Anastasia Berry:Yes. A little bit because I I feel like, like, most times, they're just so studious and so serious. So, like, when I'm talking to them, I just get so nerve my nerves are just like,
JB:oh, I'm scared
Anastasia Berry:to talk to you.
JB:Oh, wow.
Anastasia Berry:And then sometimes, most just have a mean face, but they are actually very sweet, so you you never know. You actually never know.
JB:Oh my goodness. What about you, Kylie and Ashen?
Anastasia Berry:Yeah. Yeah,
Ashton:I there's definitely a distance there whenever I hear some sort of high title, like, I'm like, oh, that's kinda scary. Don't wanna mess with that. But after meeting Annabella, everything's like, she's really cool, so.
Anastasia Berry:Bro, Annabella's the chillest man.
JB:She is. But, you know, obviously, we don't want you to to feel like that. I'm just saying I'm not just saying that because I'm an employee, but, you know, yes, they all they dress all nice and spiffy, but all you gotta do is say, hey. And you're gonna have a good conversation. All you gotta do is just like, hey.
Anastasia Berry:President. What if we say, hey. We just ruined their day. You
Ashton:you saying, hey.
JB:Oh my goodness. You saying they will definitely not ruin their day. Oh my goodness. Maybe you don't wanna
Anastasia Berry:talk today.
JB:Not at all. And you're gonna see that when we have our event. Like, there's so much fun. They're full of jokes and all that good stuff. So that's good.
JB:Alrighty. Now since we have Anastasia, I won't say Anastasia, we have so many As
Anastasia Berry:on our I'm saying you have Ashen, Anastasia,
JB:We have so many As. It's hard to keep up with. But, you know, a lot of you are new in SGA, so Anastasia is our newly appointed coordinator of programming events. And then Kylie and Ashton are both new SGA senators. So we're gonna actually get in some questions about, you know, just being new in the organization and all that good stuff.
JB:So we're starting with you, Anastasia. Yeah. Uh-huh. Yes. Spotlight.
JB:Spotlight. Okay. Alright. So and just in general, you know, what made you decide to be our coordinator of program engagement? Like, what made you apply?
Anastasia Berry:Well, I I I realized I really didn't apply, actually. I was just I I was seen as an interest. I've been in SJ for a while now, since the spring of twenty twenty six. Mhmm. I've been helping out and volunteering.
Anastasia Berry:I I actually love to volunteer and love talking. Most one thing about me, I love talking to me people and meeting new people. That's the one the one fun thing I love to do. And SJ is it's really fun because there's a lot of events I can help plan. I can help plan, coordinate.
Anastasia Berry:And, yes, when Annabel said, oh, are you interested in the coordinator for programming events? I was like, sign me up. Like, sign me up. Because I have I didn't get really get to volunteer much in high school as I'm doing right now. So this volunteering really just I'm just here, man.
Anastasia Berry:It's it's just pretty cool. I'm enjoying it so far. I will try to get I'm I'm trying I'm trying to be a better coordinator. I don't know if I'm doing a good job
Ashton:I'm going so get
JB:you are.
Anastasia Berry:You are. But I'm trying to be a better helper or coordinator as best as I can. I'm not a perfect person. No. So but it's been pretty great so far.
Anastasia Berry:My colleagues have been pretty my colleague my colleagues have been pretty fun and interesting so far.
JB:Yes.
Anastasia Berry:That's alright.
JB:So it it is hard coming into an events coordinated position when events have already been created. Yes.
Anastasia Berry:And it's sometimes it's hard to plan new events because we already we already do so much. So to find something new and interesting is, like, I have to think like, sit down and think out of the box. And then sometimes I really just scroll through TikTok. Know?
JB:Hey. You gotta use your resources. You gotta use your resources.
Anastasia Berry:I say, hey. What what can what events can students do that that they'll enjoy and have fun? You know? Yeah. Just coming in early.
JB:But the good thing is so the fall events was planned, so you have a clean slate for spring. So it's gonna be all you. Alright?
Anastasia Berry:Yeah. It's
JB:be all you with the help of SGA, with the help of everybody, you know, pitching in. So, you know, yeah, you you get the chance to plan out a whole semester of events and, you know, all that good stuff. Yes. Now, madam Kylie, we're gonna go to you. Yay.
JB:Now, Kylie's a new senator, and what made you interested in becoming an SCA senator?
Kylie Dunn:Basically, Richard Ben I don't know his name.
Anastasia Berry:Goes by both, Richard Ben.
Kylie Dunn:I low key call them both. At the same time, would be like, RichardBen?
Anastasia Berry:Yeah. We should
JB:start there, Richard Ben.
Kylie Dunn:He's in one of my classes, then as an introduction, he was like, oh, I'm in SGA and I'm social media chair or like not that. He has like a fancier name than social media chair, but he's a lot of things.
Anastasia Berry:And then
Kylie Dunn:my friend Katie, she was on the podcast like two weeks ago, but we both decided we were like, hey, what if we just join SGA? Because we weren't SGA in our high schools, like, she went to Mosley, I went to North Bay and we weren't involved in SGA, but then I was like, oh, that seems cool, I wanna get more involved with the school and then we talked to RichardBen about it.
Anastasia Berry:Richard Ben. I
Kylie Dunn:don't know. He's just, he's all of it. But we talked to him about it. And then he was like, oh, I actually need people on the social media committee to like, help me out with the post. And I was like, oh, okay, perfect.
Kylie Dunn:So then Katie and I made a video about the Math Lap, and we're planning one to do next week on, I think, the library, so stay tuned for that. Perfect. Yes. I love it very much.
JB:Let me tell you, so as Kylie said, Katie was on the podcast two weeks ago, and Kylie and Katie, was it then welcome week within set sail? Y'all came out there,
Anastasia Berry:and Oh, y'all yes. Just I remember I remember the hype. They had
JB:so much energy.
Anastasia Berry:They were so vibrant and so off. Like, life was like, yeah, I like these
JB:They girls, were supposed to spin the wheel, and they was like, oh, you want this? You want this? Like, they
Anastasia Berry:were like, sometimes
JB:yelling at.
Anastasia Berry:Sometimes when I don't see Katie, I say, where's Kylie? And if I see if I see if I see I say, where's Katie? Right?
JB:Yes. And I'm sure Richard slash man is gonna appreciate all the help because I give him a lot of work to do as far as flyers, things like that. So I'm sure he's gonna delegate as you already probably saw in the in the the group me. But, yes, y'all are creating our did you know series, and that's pretty much helping students figure out what we have on campus, all the resources. So like you said, we have a math lab.
JB:They did a great video on that, so they're gonna go to the library. And all the other resources, you're gonna be seeing coming through. Alright? Mhmm. Yes.
JB:Kylie, now on to Ashton. Now, Ashen is a senator as well, so Ashen, what brought you to SGA?
Ashton:Well, first of all, the free food.
Anastasia Berry:Yes. Yes.
Ashton:Yeah. Any chance I saw the free food, I was like, wow. This this is kind of heaven. And then I realized it was SGA putting on those things and I was like, you know, I might join SGA. And I never really did until I had study sessions in the room and
JB:I was like,
Ashton:you know, I might as well. I love helping I out did get trapped. But it's been fun so far, and I really like everyone. I like making friends. It's Right.
Ashton:Yeah.
JB:Did you were you, like, nervous at first, like, like, hesitant, or once you, you know, realized, like, you know, just being in the room, were you just comfortable going in and being a part?
Ashton:I was a little nervous. Like, there's so many faces I didn't know, and I'm not really the best at introducing myself to people. So that was an obstacle you have to overcome. So
JB:Perfect. Now I got questions for everybody. It's be the same question. Okay? Okay.
JB:So when we put on our events and things like that, like, what do you, what do you want students to feel when it comes to our SGA events?
Kylie Dunn:I want them to feel included and, like, they're not just a person going to a school. Like, we're a whole community, and there's, like, there's a bunch that we could do together and, like, you don't have to be alone because I know a lot of people, like, I just started college and I did not know what to expect and then some other people are like that and then SGA has made me feel more included and I know those events will help other people, and then they can be participating in those events and be like, oh, this school is, like, I feel included. I feel like I belong here.
JB:I love that. You don't want anything or I mean, it wasn't What she said? I mean,
Anastasia Berry:it That was great. Wow. That was already good. She said it perfectly.
JB:So I gotta do have a question. So, like, what is something I mean, well, don't use the easy answer. It's part it's joining SGA. But what is something that you already said yes to this semester that you probably wouldn't have said yes to a year ago? I can say SGA.
JB:Was there anything else out of this shit? Like, is there something that's I mean, we can just make it as broad as just, like, find a new food that you like, something like that, you know, or a new hobby or activity. Just think about how, you know, we change in just a year, you know, Sometimes.
Kylie Dunn:I'm voluntarily taking more classes than I have to because I joined an honors class, I love very much. Influencers, we
JB:have a few classes.
Kylie Dunn:But I don't think a year ago I would have chosen to do more school and more classes, but I've changed now and
Anastasia Berry:that's just one class. I I don't think a year ago it would be this outspoken and have as many friends as I have right now because I grew up as an only child, so I'm used to being by myself.
JB:Mhmm.
Anastasia Berry:So coming to college has changed it a lot. I met a lot of nice teachers, nice staff, nice and just overall nice people on campus. And there are very people on campus, like the teachers, the students, they're very supportive than in high school. No shade. They're very supportive.
Anastasia Berry:And I feel like that has made me grown as a person. They Yeah. I'm just more outspoken because I feel like I can talk to people more easy easily in college. Yeah. Now it's more easier to go up to someone and say, hey, how's your day?
Anastasia Berry:Do you need help or anything? Like, I feel like it's more easier to talk to people in college, so that's how I've I've changed over a year.
JB:Nice. Okay. So, obviously, y'all are students, and sometimes we have long days. So what is your I have a long day on camp campus survival item or routine or something that gets you back settled after a long day?
Anastasia Berry:You guys wanna take this one?
Ashton:The car ride home listening to music.
JB:Okay. That's actually a follow-up to my next question, is what song that puts you in a good mood? So we'll answer those two questions together, yeah. If you if the song is, you know,
Ashton:what you I don't know. My mind is blinking. I have a song oh, it's Back to the Start by SOMO.
JB:Okay. Okay.
Ashton:It's a really good beat.
JB:It's like I had a long day. Turn on the SOMO, please. Mhmm. Yep. Anybody else?
Kylie Dunn:Mine is Sola. Sola? Yes, because I have that's my I had a long day. I go to the cafeteria, I go to Sola, and then sometimes in the morning, I'll walk up there, and I've gone so often. The girl, like yesterday, I don't know her name, if you're watching, I love you.
Kylie Dunn:But I just walked up and she was like, 16 or 20 ounce?
Anastasia Berry:And then I told
Kylie Dunn:her 20 ounces and she put in my exact order and I was like,
Anastasia Berry:oh, okay.
JB:So you're a regular okay?
Kylie Dunn:And my song that gets me in a good mood is literally anything by Olivia Rodrigo anything whatsoever Even her sad songs will put me in a
JB:good mood. This is good music right
Kylie Dunn:yeah literally
Anastasia Berry:After all guys, I'm pretty boring, guys. After a long day, I go home and go play with my bunnies at home and that's pretty much it. Sometimes after a long day, go to the library just chilling. I literally sleep in the library. You know, I go to the the 2nd Floor, go in the the little quiet errand to sleep.
Ashton:Do we need to get you a blanket?
Anastasia Berry:Oh, girl. I just sleep. And I don't I listen to any type of music, so any music that pops up on my Spotify, I just listen listen to it. I don't really have a specific genre of music. I listen to anything I feel like to listen to that day.
Anastasia Berry:Yeah. So.
JB:Nice. Okay. Now, if Gulf Coast unexpectedly closed and we had to cancel class for a day, what are you doing?
Kylie Dunn:Probably sleeping in.
Anastasia Berry:No. I'm saying, if I if I were if I were supposed to answer honestly, if golf clothes close for a day, I'm going home to sleep. If I don't have work for that day, I'm staying home. You know, I love I'm a homebody, guys. I love my bed.
Anastasia Berry:I love the TV.
JB:Same. Same. So
Anastasia Berry:yes. That's my honest answer.
JB:What about you, Ashley?
Ashton:Same here. Play games.
JB:We're just staying home, so we're not going out shopping. We're not hitting the beach. No. My god. We're not getting out the bed.
JB:I love that. Oh my goodness. Okay. I know we are, you know, still kind of fairly new in the semester, about a month in. So just for right now, if your semester had a title, what would it be?
Anastasia Berry:I had to think about this one.
JB:Wait, we can use song titles as well. You know, we talk about songs.
Anastasia Berry:You can use one of your Olivia watches. I don't know. Girl is not great.
JB:Hey, I love it. I love it. Yes. We got this girl that's on fire. Alicia Keys.
JB:Anything? Anything?
Anastasia Berry:I don't know. It's it's a it has been a lot. I'm taking some of the classes, guys. It's tiring. You know
JB:I've taken a lot of classes.
Anastasia Berry:Don't know.
JB:I honestly don't know how you're doing it, but you I manage it I see why you're sleeping in the library, taking a nap.
Anastasia Berry:Okay. Okay, colleague. Okay.
JB:But, no, honestly, like, when when you say you were taking all those classes, I was like, Anastasia. You're you're balancing everything.
Anastasia Berry:It's it's pretty tiring, but it's been pretty great. Guys, I'm a overachiever. I push myself to limits that God knows why, but it's I would say this semester has been pretty inspiring and great. Nice. Eye opening to a lot of classes.
JB:Three titles right there. Eye opening. Great eye opening.
Kylie Dunn:Yes. And Anastasia's in, like, all the clubs. Like, she's in what? She joined three law club at FSUTC? She's at Honors Club.
Kylie Dunn:I know she's repping that. Yes.
Anastasia Berry:I'm like the don't know what I'm I'm the director for the I don't know what am I for an honors program because I do a lot for the honors program. So, you know, I do a lot. I'm the SGA rep for the SGA. Honors rep for the SGA, coordinator for programming engagement for the SGA, taking some classes in the prelaw club. Oh, I'm also in multi UN.
Kylie Dunn:Aren't you in trio?
Anastasia Berry:And I'm also in trio. So I don't that's the thing. I'm an over that from ever since I've I'm lit I've been little, I've always been doing stuff like this. I like to push myself to the limits because that's how my parents raised me. Shout out to my mom and dad.
Anastasia Berry:Shout Perfect.
JB:Alright, Kylie. Have you thought of anything yet? Thought of a title?
Kylie Dunn:Olivia Rodrigo. I was literally just thinking of Olivia Rodrigo. She has this one song called Maggots Her Brains, and that's what this semester has given me. Uh-huh. I'm just taking on so much, not as much as Anastasia, shout out to you, but I think I'm taking, what is it, fifteen credit hours?
Kylie Dunn:And then I'm also pre law club, SGA, social media committee for all that because that's basically my life is just social media.
Anastasia Berry:I was about to say, she is in the social media committee for the pre law club. Social media for SGA. Might as well be social media for Honest Program, girl.
Kylie Dunn:I What the influencer class is?
Ashton:I'm thinking I need to be doing more stuff. I
Anastasia Berry:can tell you, I you love social media. That's really That is really great.
JB:You're all great. I love it. Alrighty. So, yes, we missed last week. Alright.
JB:We won't miss another one. Sorry. I don't wanna speak too early, but we we try to miss another one. Only time we miss if we're at a conference, so we'll miss another one. But, yes, we had several events this week and last week, some events we had to pivot on, but that's what we do here at SGA.
JB:We have great students here that help leave all lead all of these events and do a great job, and they have a wonderful connection. I just love hearing y'all connect outside my office every day, things like that. Love loud and vibrant. Y'all are amazing.
Anastasia Berry:I bother my colleague every day, guys.
JB:Yes. Yeah. Next week, come try something new. Meet the deans, ask them questions, get familiar, and more importantly, grab you a donut and some milk. Alright?
JB:We'll see you next week. And stay calm, stay curious, and stay anchored Commodores. Hi.
